  • How to find us

    From the south:

    • Exit the A1(M) at Junction 63
    • Follow the A693 signposted 'Stanley' and Beamish Museum
    • At the Beamish Museum roundabout continue forward up the hill
    • At the top of the hill turn right following signposts to Gateshead and the A6076
    • You will arrive at a junction with a petrol station on your left. Turn right
    • South Causey is 300 yards along this road on your right

    From the north:

    • While traveling south on the A1 you will pass the Metro Centre on your left
    • Follow signs for Consett on the A692
    • You will pass through the village of Sunniside
    • At the second set of traffic lights (with the Potters Wheel Public House on the left) turn left
    • Follow this road for approx 3 miles
    • The South Causey is on your left (before you reach the 30mph signs)

South Causey Inn is a family-owned hotel with a ‘country feel’ family pub, restaurant, and cocktail bar and is recognised for genuinely kind and generous service. The hotel has 60 unique bedrooms and suites, from cosy en suite rooms to themed suites with private parking, luxury hot tubs, plush interiors, waterfall showers, private gardens, copper baths, and more.

Beamish Museum

A must-see!! Just a five-minute journey from the Inn. A living open-air museum, with a Victorian town, (with shops and even a pub!) farm, school and mine. Allow a full day to visit, and “Davey’s Fish Shop” serves traditional Fish n Chips served in Beef dripping.

Tanfield Railway

All aboard the World's Oldest Railway! Take a steam train ride back in time at the Tanfield Railway for a 3-mile journey through the beautiful Causey Valley. Hauled by a lovingly restored industrial steam engine, you'll take a seat on a recreated colliery carriage.

Durham Pride

Durham Pride is returning for 2024 and promises to be the biggest celebration of LGBT+ diversity Durham has ever seen! The day will have music, bars, food, market stalls, fun fair and military themed displays.

Durham Brass Festival

5th - 13th, July 2024

Taking inspiration from the brass band heritage of Durham and celebrating brass music in all its forms, Durham Brass Festival brings together all musical genres into a nine-day festival taking place across County Durham.

Durham Miners Gala

13th, July 2024

Every year, more than 200,000 people march in Britain’s biggest celebration of trade union and community values – the Durham Miners’ Gala. Since 1871, the Gala has given a voice to the oppressed throughout the world.

Kynren

5th - 13th, July 2024

The multi-award-winning live action outdoor theatre spectacular is set in the beautifully landscaped grounds of Kynren, nestled at the bottom of the escarpment on which Auckland CastleBishop Auckland, proudly sits.

Durham Fringe Festival

July 24th - 28th 2024

Durham Fringe Festival 2024 will have something for everyone, with music, comedy, dance, theatre and more, in a collection of cosy alternative venues. You will also get the chance to make the most of what the city has to offer. 

Seaham Food Festival

3rd - 7th, August 2024

The Seaham Food Festival brings together traders and producers from across the region to sell their delicious treats. Soak up the atmosphere with live music and attractions and buy lots of goodies to take home too.

Wolsingham Show

7th - 8th September 2024

Wolsingham Show takes place every year and is the oldest agricultural show in the country. Attractions include sulky racing, fur and feather exhibits, falconry displays, brass band, a parade of champions and many side shows.

England V Australia

24th, September 2024

England women will take on New Zealand in the first of a three match one-day series on Wednesday 26 June. The men’s one day team will make a welcome return to Chester le Street when they take on arch rivals Australia!
