GIN REVOLUTION....
Gin is everywhere! It is in cocktails, in food and distilleries are springing up left right and centre!

But why has Gin suddenly made a comeback...

You might think that gin is a new trendy tipple ...  but gin is in fact only reclaiming its rightful place as king of the spirit world.

Although gin is thought of as a very English beverage it actually is an adaptation of the Dutch drink “genever”. In the 17th Century Dutch soldiers would drink “genever” before going into battle – giving birth to the term “Dutch Courage”. During the 30 years’ war English soldiers purloined the idea and after 150 years of perfecting a purer version of “genever” – Gin was born!

Gin has a bit of a dark history - with it even been known as “Mothers Ruin”. The “Gin Craze” was a period during the 1st half of the 18th Century which started because of economic changes which lead to common people having some disposable income to spend on liquor. High taxes on imported spirits meant unlicensed distilleries sprung all over London and gin consumption rocketed, as it was a cheap and easily available. It was estimated that the average Londoner drink 14 gallons of gin a year. The government blamed (rightly or wrongly) gin for all of society’s problems at the time and the government stepped in to set stricter controls.

Our history with gin shows our love of it but its rise in popularity is linked to our love of cocktails too. Gin is a great base for cocktails due to its lightness. Gin holds its own flavour in a cocktail but allows other flavours to blend with it.

This characteristic also means it is possible to create a wide diversity of different types of gin – and this is why gin is the king! Gin begins life quite neutrally and is then infused with juniper berries and different botanical – to create a unique taste!
